Hear From Horse Owners Like You
Every horse and every journey is unique. Here, you’ll find real stories from owners who trusted me to help their horses feel and perform their best. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of their journeys—and excited to share their experiences with you.

As a barn manager, I was feeling extremely overwhelmed with my feeding program for 10+ horses, and wanted to make sure all the horses were meeting their nutritional requirements to perform and feel their best. Makaila has been such a big help in streamlining my feeding program and helping to ensure every horse’s needs are met. The transition over to my barns new feed program was super easy with Makaila providing a thorough outline of the plan, and always being available for questions. I am super happy with how my horses look and feel after the first 30 days and look forward to continuing to use Makaila’s expertise on the rest of my horse’s nutritional journeys.

I reached out to Makaila on a recommendation from a friend for my thoroughbred gelding Bentley. I’ve owned Bentley for 2 years and we’ve always struggled to put weight on him until Makaila recommend a new diet. Makaila made the new plan simple, streamlined and more cost effective. She answered every question and contacted my local feed store to find the best options that were available to me. I love that Makaila is not connected with any particular brand and finds what is best for each horse and eliminated all unnecessary supplements. After implementing Bentley’s new diet plan I was so impressed with the amount of work and detail Makaila put in. I asked her to make a diet plan for my 3 older retired horses and Makaila was understanding of their needs in retirement and made it as cost effective as possible. Bentley has now gained more weight, improved muscling and improved energy. Makaila has been amazing to work with, easily accessible for all of my questions and truly invested in my horses.

My gelding needed to lose 30 to 40 lbs.  Makaila took away all the guess-work on how to achieve that goal by simplifying his diet with more targeted hay and supplementation to ensure he received the nutrients he needed. Her comprehensive report compared current diet and nutrition to a recommended diet along an implementation plan and a list of places to purchase everything.  She checked in with me regularly on his process and answered all my questions in a friendly, informative and helpful way.  In the end, he lost the weight without getting frustrated or stressed by the new feeding regimen and his coat and muscling showed great improvement! I’m pretty sure that without Makaila’s help we’d still be struggling to resolve his weight issues, so I consider hiring Makaila for her expertise money very well spent. (Now, if only she could help me with a few pounds!)

I was a bit lost trying to navigate a feeding program for my lactating mare. She was hanging onto a lot of weight after the birth and I wanted to see her look better, while still being able to properly nurse her foal in the later stages. I reached out to Makaila for help because I was feeling a bit like a mad scientist with all the powders and supplements and just not seeing a change in my horses.

I get my hay from multiple different sources and not all of it is tested. I was a bit concerned that having Makaila out would not help me because of that lack of data. But she formulated a simple plan that works for my herd and covers their needs even with the unknowns in their hay. Having tested hay is nice, but not always the easiest option and she completely understood that.

Every single meeting with her was thorough, from the discovery call, to the initial assessment, follow up zoom call and then the one month check in. You get SO much information for your money and more importantly it's tailored to your horses needs so you're not sifting through online articles and websites that want to sell you their product. Eden changed so much over the two months, her coat got even better than it was, and she lost about 50 pounds which is an appropriate and safe amount of weight loss for a broodmare over that amount of time. I recommend Makaila to all my horse owner friends, especially ones who have easy keepers because it can be an extra challenge to meet their needs while facilitating weight loss. Thank you so much Makaila!

I contacted FAR equine Nutrition to help me get a handle on a case of Fecal Water Syndrome in a new Haflinger yearling and to advise about weight loss in a senior Haflinger with arthritis.

Makaila came to my place and evaluated my boys thoroughly. She interpreted my hay analyses and explained them an in an easy to understand way. She made suggestions of products, where to buy, and amounts to balance this hay for both horses on opposite ends of the spectrum. She used most of what was already in my feed room. We added only necessary, proven supplements and removed others.

Makaila was easy to work with, very accessible, and worked within the confines of my farm setup. She also considered financial factors. I appreciated that she recognized that my breed of choice is different statured than lighter horses and treated them as such.

I learned a lot from Makaila and FAR Equine Nutrition and now have normal poops and a thinner, more active old man.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone who wants to optimize their feed programs.

I would strongly recommend Makaila to anyone who has horses! She actually reduced my feed costs by removing anything unnecessary from my feeding program and calculating exactly what my horses needed. My hardest keeper put so much weight on once his needs were being met that we actually had to adjust his diet back down to a maintenance level. The ones who needed to gain muscle through the top line have improved significantly despite being off work for the season. I look forward to continuing to work with Makaila!

Makaila has been great to work with and a huge help with both of my horses. She did thorough body assessments on both of them and put together plans that actually made sense and met their different needs.

My 4yo was a bit overweight and my new gelding was a bit underweight heading into winter. Within a month of starting Makaila’s recommended diet, they were both much closer to their ideal weights. She also simplified and streamlined their diets, which made things way easier day-to-day. My newest horse came from out of province, so his new diet needed to work with what we have available locally, and she handled that perfectly.

Makaila is practical, knowledgeable, and puts a lot of effort into researching different feeds and what is readily available in your area. I’d absolutely recommend her to anyone who wants their horse on their ideal diet that meets all their nutritional needs without feeding so many extras.

I am so impressed with Diva’s nutritional improvement since meeting Makaila at FAR Equine Nutrition. Her knowledge and expertise has been so valuable to us. WHen DIva colicked, she was there for me, available early and late, to help guide me and troubleshoot how to get this mare to drink water in the winter temperatures. Thank you for being there for us and genuinely caring about DIva and her health.

Makaila was very educational with the nutrition talk she gave us at Chase Creek Eventing. Loved how she doesn’t work for any specific feed company so does not take preference to one brand, more so going for the best feed on the market for each specific horses needs. She helped me calculate exactly what my horse needed for supplements, made me realize I was over supplementing, and now she’s saved me money because I do not have to feed half as many of the supplements I used to. Her program write up after her assessment with your horse is easy to understand, lengthly with so much info, and if something doesn’t quite make sense she’s very good at explaining it a different way. She is ON IT with the follow ups as your horse adapts to the new feed and program and is always suggesting the best for your horse. And best of all, she’s super affordable, approachable and friendly! HIGHLY suggest FAR equine nutrition!

I’m so thankful for everything Makaila has done for my horses. Especially my main guy moose, over the last 5+ years that I’ve owned him, I’ve tried every supplement, every brand and I could never keep weight on him in full work. Thanks to Makaila she’s not only simplified his feeding regime and cut down lots of my costs, but I’ve never had him look this good while in full work.

Makaila’s not loyal to any specific brand or company she chooses whatever will work best for you and your horse, she even contacted my local feed stores to see if they could ship feed in for me. I highly recommend using Makaila to help with your horses nutrition, it was a game changer for me and my barn!

I would happily recommend Makaila for anyone looking to streamline, tweak and improve their horses nutritional needs. She was able to help me break down everything that I was currently feeding, what was helping and what might not be necessary. We adjusted a few things to make sure he was getting what he needs, and she provided an easy transition program to make it simple. We also reviewed how to adjust his feed based on the time of year and work load. Quinn is looking and feeling great, and my feed program feels much more manageable now. Thank you Makaila!

“I just want to give a big shout out to Makaila at FAR Equine Nutrition for recently evaluating my mares' diets.

Nutrition is such a huge part of what makes a happy, healthy horse. In my work I often see horses struggling with a) weight issues and/or b) unbalanced diets contributing to immune issues/general lacklustre/mineral deficiencies etc. Supplements are generally overdone IMO and it can be overwhelming deciding what to feed.

Makaila helped me streamline my girls' feeding plans and make sure they will be getting what they need through the coming months. I always feed tested hay and it was so nice having someone else evaluate things and make sure I wasn't missing something!! She is not affiliated with any brand/feed company and is very educated and easy to work with.

I highly recommend getting a nutritionist on board if you haven't already. This is just as important as your saddle fitter, farrier, bodyworker, trainer..

If your horse isn't consuming what their body needs on a daily basis, it can be impossible for them to perform the activities we ask of them. This also applies to breeding stock!

In short:

Makaila McLean rocks and is super smart

Test your hay!

and nutrition should never be overlooked!

“Makaila has been such a huge help with my horses. My senior horse has been hard to keep weight on as he’s getting older, but under her program he’s finally holding weight and his coat has a healthy shine. My other horse has slimmed down, built more definition, and looks stronger than ever.

She is incredibly knowledgeable and explains everything in a way that’s easy to understand. Makaila is also a great communicator, always professional, clear, and supportive. You can tell she really cares about the horses she works with.

I’ve been so impressed with the results and would highly recommend Makaila to anyone looking for expert guidance in equine nutrition.”

Anyone who is having trouble figuring out how much hay to feed your horse or horses or what kind of grain to give them depending on age , physical fitness etc… please reach out to FAR Equine Nutrition. I thought oh my horses look great but honestly who was I kidding? They both were overweight and in terrible physical shape because of it. My fault for not taking the time to really see the importance in proper nutrition and also supplementing them with better quality products. So I reached out to Makaila for help and she stepped in and opened up my eyes . Wow- she is so full of great information and if she doesn’t know she finds out right away as she truly cares about the horse and the owner. I am so impressed on how well she has not only communicated with me via email and txt but also calls me frequently to ask how I am doing. Her plans are well organized and easy to follow. I highly recommend FAR Equine Nutrition . Please don’t hesitate give her a try you will never look back. Thank you agin for all you have done for Lacey and Ransom and I.

“Makaila made the process of creating a nutrition plan for Sonnet simple and stress free. Especially since I live in a rural area of Northern Canada, I appreciated Makaila’s flexibility in organizing video calls and email communication in order to best accommodate me. Makaila did research into the feed stores closest to me after discussing how far I was willing to travel to purchase grains and supplements, and made recommendations based on what products were available in my area.

Maintaining a competition horse in addition to working full time with shift work, it’s important to me to have my horses on a diet that is not only optimal for their health, but is also easy to prepare for those days I’m coming off night shifts. Makaila was able to make this happen for me.

After only one month, Sonnet is looking and feeling fantastic on her new diet regimen. In addition to the physical attributes that Sonnet is starting to improve in only a few short weeks, her mental attitude has improved as well, being more relaxed in her work and not having any “explosive” energy if she has a couple of days off.

I highly recommend Makaila at FAR equine nutrition, regardless is you live in a large urban area or rural community with limited resources.”

“I have been struggling with what to feed my horses for quite awhile. I have quite the breed and age spread. I have horses in work and retired, and I want them all looking and feeling good. Easy keeper QHs to hard keeper TBs. Ages 2-29. I knew what I had them on wasn’t what was best for them. I wasn’t sure if they were getting what they needed either. I knew Makaila in high school and was super excited to hear she was currently obtaining her Masters of Equine Science and was completing her Certified Equine Nutrition Advisor program.

She’s gone back and forth with me on getting a feed program for my guys. And I ask a lot of questions. I want all of my horses feeling and looking their best.

Through our discussions and consults, she was educated and was able to streamline my program but also customize diets for the individual horses’ needs.

My horses have never looked better. My 29 year old Hanoverian/thoroughbred mare has gained weight, is shiny, dappled and getting around SO well. I’m now 100% sure my easy keepers are actually getting what they need and not just a bunch of extra stuff they don’t need. My horses that are in work are muscling up, shiny and feel SO good.

If you’re looking for someone who cares for horses as much as you do, who will answer the questions you have, who will tell you when she doesn’t know something and will find the answer — Makaila is your girl.”

I have a young competition horse who’s always been a hard keeper, especially as he’s gone through growth phases. I had him on countless grains and supplements just to keep weight on him and support his health, and was spending a small fortune each month. Even on GastroGard, he would still drop weight at shows.

Makaila was able to simplify his entire feeding program, significantly cut costs, and—most importantly—help him maintain a consistently healthy body condition. I can’t believe we are half way through competition season and he is looking better than ever! I’m absolutely thrilled with the results and look forward to relying on her nutrition expertise for all of my horses going forward.

“My senior mare had troubles gaining and sustaining weight. I had my mare on 7 feeds/supplements for weight gain, joint pain, and overall health. Makaila has taken the time to understand my mares needs, consulting with her backed by science education and own experience, she developed a tailored feeding plan. Makaila was thorough from the beginning, guiding me on how to begin the new feed plan, helping me with measurements to ensure my mare was receiving the appropriate amounts of feed for optimal results. Makaila helped reduce unnecessary feeds, making it cost effective, yet achieveing our goal. In 30 days, my mare is showing a positive transformation with improved weight, muscle definition, shiny coat, and the fact that she truly enjoys the food and never leaves any behind in her feed pan is a bonus! I would highly recommend Makaila to anyone who is struggling or simply curious on what their horse may be lacking or isn’t achieving.”

Makaila looked at everything I was giving him, and made recommendations to improve what I was already doing. Having Makaila’s expert eye analyze his needs and tweak his feeding regime to get the most nutrition possible gave me incredible peace of mind. Meet Munchkin — a 21-year-old Quarter Horse mare who competes in western dressage. Her owner’s goals were:

 ✅ Support healthy weight loss
✅ Balance her diet for regular riding and performance
✅ Improve intermittent diarrhea
✅ Build muscle for light performance work

I created a tailored nutrition plan with a strong focus on gut health, muscle development, and maintaining ideal energy levels for her discipline — providing the nutrients she needs without adding excess calories

✨ The results?
Munchkin has lost weight in a healthy, controlled way, built muscle, and- best of all-  her diarrhea has vastly improved. No more messy cleanups, which has been a huge relief! Her owner says she’s feeling fantastic — and their recent rides have been some of their best yet!
